 etwork pumping systems are only a small part of th
 e sewer network\, yet they have a disproportionate
  impact on the performance of many sewerage system
 s\, due to poor hydraulic performance\, poor relia
 bility\, odour complaints\, bacterial corrosion an
 d short asset lives . The environmental impact of 
 failures is also high\, with a high proportion of 
 them leading to serious pollution and prosecution.
  </span></p>\n \n <p><span style="font-size:14px\;
 ">Reliability problems and poor performance of net
 work pumping installations are often caused\, or e
 xacerbated by\, ill-informed decisions taken right
  at the start of the planning stage. Design change
 s during construction that are not properly consid
 ered by the designers\, and subsequent changes are
  also a major cause of failures as are poorly cons
 idered upgrading or refurbishment schemes.</span><
 /p>\n \n <p><span style="font-size:14px\;">To help
  to address the problem\, the Water Research Centr
 e (WRc) is publishing a new manual which describes
  the complete design process\, pointing out the im
 plications of each decision. Resilience is conside
 red at each stage with the development of continge
 ncy plan a key part of the design process.</span><

 minar will outline the common causes of many of th
 e problems experienced with wastewater pumping sys
 tems as well as providing an overview of the new m
 anual and the significant changes to approach that

 specialist areas include sewer inspection technolo
 gies\, sewer deterioration mechanisms\, sewer coll
 apse analysis\, sewer rehabilitation design.  </sp

  sans-serif\;">Nick was Secretary to the European 
 Standards Working Group CEN TC165/WG22 'Drainage o
 utside buildings' for over 25 years and is now a m
 ember of the UK delegation. During this time the g
 roup produced EN 16932 on the design of wastewater
  pumping systems. He was a major contributor to th
 e WRc rising mains manual in 2006 and principal au
 thor of the forthcoming WRc wastewater pumping sys
 tems design manual. He was the winner of the 2024 
 WaPUG Prize from the Chartered Institution of Wate
 r and Environmental Management (CIWEM) for his sig
 nificant contribution to the development of Urban 
 Drainage Practice.</span></span></span></p>\n \n <

 a Chartered Civil Engineer with 35 years of experi
 ence in water and wastewater networks. Phillip has
  developed extensive expertise in the design and r
 ehabilitation of pipeline infrastructure\, contrib
 uting to best practice across the sector. </span><
