In The Pipeline - December 2018
I HAVE TO ADMIT I don’t read In the Pipeline in the usual way. My habit is to turn straight to
Branch News and catch up on the latest dinners
and meet-ups. For me, these regional reports
represent the backbone of the Guild and provide
a good guide to how organisation is doing.
I’m glad to report that the various dinners,
technical events and networking get-togethers
suggest a proactive, thriving Guild doing what
it does best across the country: spreading
knowledge and bringing like-minded people
together. Long may it continue into 2019!
Talking of meet-ups, this issue features a report
on one of the Guild’s most celebrated events: the
President’s Address. Congratulations to Steven
Fraser for delivering a superb speech that put
our present challenges and achievements in the
context of those mighty Victorian pioneers.
I always like to see industry figures giving their
views in our letter, so I was pleased to see Ron
James from STATSGroup take part in our Q&A.
Read his interview for a deeper insight into what
STATSGroup does, some of Ron’s most memorable
jobs and his thoughts on the state of the industry.
This issue also features a story that couldn’t be
better timed. I’m sure you all heard about the
devastating cyber security breach at Marriott
International. While it concerns a
different industry altogether, its still
a warning for us all to put our house
in order when it comes to defending
against cybercrime. Our feature on
page 10, kindly submitted by DNV GL,
looks at how you can do just that.
Finally, enjoy the issue and
have a great Christmas and
New Year. See you in 2019!
