About the Company:
The infrastructure research group at the University of Birmingham has conducted research into many aspects pipelines over a number of years. This includes research into trenchless technology for installing and renewing pipelines, plastic pipes, soil-pipe interaction (including voiding caused by water leaks), the interaction between cast-iron pipes and different ground conditions, and sensors for monitoring pipelines. We have also looked at the current design standards for designing buried rigid and flexibe pipes, and how these could be improved. The University of Birmingham has been the lead academic institution in the EPSRC funded research projects Mapping the Underworld and Assessing the Underworld. These multidisciplinary, multi-university research projects Mapping the Underworld and Assessing the Underworld. These multidisciplinary, multi-university research projects have investigated improving the location of buried services using geophysical techniques and investigating the condition of both the surace infrastructure, such as roads, and the buried infrastructure, such as pipes. The research at Birmingham also includes gaining an improved understanding the influence of the ground on these geophysical techniques and how changes in the ground propertiecan have a major impact on the long-term performance of the surface and buried infrastructure. Birmingham is also developing a sustainability assessment framework for utility streetworks to determine the optimal intervention in both the short and long term, i.e. during to the construction and during maintenance activities.
