Inspiring Innovation, Cost-Saving and Efficiency
The iICE award, introduced in 2016, was inspired by the DNV-OS-F101, the offshore standard for submarine pipeline systems that was issued in 1976. Over the years DNV GL has created a series of internationally recognised standards, service specifications and recommended practices together with the pipeline industry. This award, is for the best idea for increasing efficiency and reducing costs in the pipeline industry. This is the first industry award for an idea rather than proven technologies.

This project delivers a UK-first step change in pipeline commissioning through low water air swabbing at scale, setting the new standard. Applied across 54km across a 630mm pipeline, the method replaced conventional flushing with an air-driven swab process, achieving up to 99% water savings while meeting<10 NTU standards. It simplifies logistics, reduces programme risk, and provides a scalable, sustainable model for future delivery.
