Webinar - Investigation of Oxygen Inhibition Effects on Pipeline Steels
The UK National Transmission System (NTS) is comprised of steel materials of varying grades operating at typically 70 bar (1000 psi) pressure. It is necessary to understand the effect of hydrogen over time on these pipelines to determine their potential lifetime in a hydrogen use case. The pipelines are of varying ages and prior use cycles so could therefore react differently to those previously tested in lab environments and to those seen in other pipeline applications. Developing a dataset that enables modelling of the various pipeline states seen across the NTS will be invaluable as we move towards our Net Zero targets.
Oxygen has been shown in several previous laboratory studies to have a strong mitigating effect against the potential for hydrogen embrittlement, although the applicability of these studies to NTS materials and operational conditions is not fully understood.
To address this gap, National Gas have contracted ROSEN to design and carry out a research programme to investigate the effects of small additions of oxygen to mitigate hydrogen embrittlement of pipeline steels representative of the UK NTS. This will enable optimised network efficiency and reduce the cost of the transition to hydrogen. This webinar outlines the experimental design and summarises available results.
