About the Company:
The Welding Engineering Research Centre at Cranfield University provides basic, strategic and applied research and related postgraduate training in Welding Engineering. The Centre's welding laboratory contains state-of-the-art equipment, including the latest robotic, laser and arc welding equipment, with access to modern metallographic and testing facilities. The Centre is the largest academic group in the United Kingdom dedicated to welding and welding automation. The Centre has a strong activity in pipeline welding and works with a number of major pipeline companies and welding contractors. Work includes investigating welding metallurgy of X100 linepipe, development of high productivity welding processes for pipeline construction, and deep-water hyperbaric tie-in and repair welding. The Welding Engineering Research Centre was the first to apply tandem arc welding to narrow groove pipe welding, and has completed development of CAPS (Cranfield Automated Pipe Welding System) dual tandem welding. The CAPS technology has been transferred to industry, and the tandem pipeline welding processes developed at Cranfield are now in commercial use. Current developments are focussing on root pass welding, process monitoring and control, pipeline weldingautomation and pipeline laser welding.
