Award Winner's Webinar: Heading underground - upgrading Thanet’s sewers
In the early 1900s Thanet was thriving, the railway had brought in hundreds of visitors looking to benefit from the healing properties of seabathing. At the same time, up to 28-meters below the busy streets, miners were digging tunnels through the chalk; this subterranean labyrinth was to become Thanet’s sewer network, with pipes resting at the bottom of tunnels carrying away the wastewater. Each tunnel is unique, matching the stature of those that created them – some tall and thin, some wide and stout.
Southern Water has invested more than £30m upgrading this ageing network across Ramsgate and Broadstairs, ensuring it’s fit for future generations. Delivered by confined space and trenchless tunneling experts TPMD, at its peak the project had an 80-strong specialist workforce scattered across 15 separate sites. With access and egress via existing manholes in streets ranging from wide avenues to tight terraces, this was a challenging and high-risk project included tunnel repairs, Cured-in-Place-Pipe lining, shaft construction and manhole rebuilds.
