The session will provide an overview of initiatives being delivered across the Southern Water region to reduce reliance on storm overflow systems, improve river and coastal water quality, and support environmental outcomes. The presentation will be delivered by Jon Yates and Nick Mills from Southern Water.
Jon Yates – Head of Delivery, Clean Rivers and Seas taskforce, Southern Water

Jon Yates is a senior infrastructure professional with extensive experience in the UK water sector. He currently serves as Head of Delivery at Southern Water, where he leads the execution of major programmes and projects across the region including the Clean Rivers and Seas Taskforce.
With a career spanning project and programme management roles within Southern Water, Jon has developed strong expertise in civil engineering, drainage, and construction delivery. He holds a BSc (Hons) in Civil Engineering from the University of Greenwich and maintains professional accreditations with the Association for Project Management and the Institution of Civil Engineers.
Jon brings a practical, delivery-focused perspective to infrastructure challenges, with a strong track record in leading multidisciplinary teams and driving project outcomes in complex operational environments.
Dr Nick Mills – Director of Environment & Innovation, Southern Water

Dr Nick Mills is Director of Environment & Innovation at Southern Water, where he leads the development and delivery of innovative programmes to improve environmental outcomes across the region.
A Chartered Engineer with an Engineering Doctorate, Nick has a strong track record in delivering complex, large-scale infrastructure and transformation programmes within the UK water sector. His work focuses on partnership-led, catchment-based approaches to reduce storm overflows and enhance environmental resilience, including programmes demonstrated at scale across the South East.
Prior to his current role, Nick held several senior leadership positions at Southern Water, including Head of the Clean Rivers & Seas Task Force and Head of Pollution & Flooding Resilience, as well as serving as Head of Innovation at Thames Water.
Nick brings a forward-looking perspective on sustainability and innovation in water infrastructure, with a focus on delivering practical, scalable solutions to industry-wide challenges.
