About the Company:
East Midlands Pipeline Ltd (EMP) is delivering a nationally significant project to accelerate the UK’s hydrogen economy by repurposing legacy fossil fuel infrastructure for the green energy transition. A 63km underground pipeline is being converted into a hydrogen-ready asset for the transport and storage of green hydrogen, with operational readiness targeted by the end of 2027. The pipeline will form the backbone of a regional hydrogen ecosystem, linking production, storage, and offtake sites across the East and West Midlands. This will support energy security and decarbonisation in industry, transport, and heat. EMP is working with local authorities, national stakeholders, and private investors on a phased delivery plan, starting with pipeline reactivation and initial hydrogen generation. Strategically located “nodal” sites will enable generation, storage, and multi-sector offtake, with capacity scaling as demand and generation grow. The pipeline provides the only near-term solution to connect key regional assets such as Ratcliffe-on-Soar, East Midlands Airport, the EMAGIC Freeport, and major industrial users within the corridor. This project presents a unique opportunity to unlock a hydrogen ecosystem at pace and scale. The resulting Pipeline Area Energy Plan (PAEP) will be the UK’s first operational hydrogen system capable of full integration with the NTS.
